Offshore-can-you-believe-it-2?!!!!
You know those old spy movies where the super secret double agent has a briefcase handcuffed to their wrist? That's how I felt during our move with my tub of OffShore 2
Packing the sewing room was a challenge, to say the least. We started out Marie Kondo-ing our way through old tubs and managed to weed out a bit......but....there was quite a lot that "sparked joy." Fabric has a way of doing that. Boy, was our joy sparked the day Riley Blake Designs posted a sneak peak of Deena Rutter's sequel to OffShore!
There's something magical about a collection that evokes warm memories of family vacations taken in woody station wagons to beachy places. It's an episode of Gidget, an Annette Funicello movie and a Beach Boy song all rolled up into a textile delight.
In fact, we were so delighted with the original OffShore we made a foundation pieced block of Deena's adorable beach hut with a surfboard standing stately at it's side.
OffShore 2 was just as dreamy and got us so excited we knew we wanted to use that block to make a quilt right away--even if we were packing up to move!
With foundation piecing I've learned to sew a practice block or two with scraps just to make sure I've laid it out in the most logical, sew friendly way. So as Jess packed around me, I tweaked the block a couple times. As the pile of boxes grew, only she can tell you for sure, but I think I might have asked her ten times a day where OffShore 2 was. That led to the designated tub which never left our sight.
Needless to say, the tub made it, the sewing room was unpacked lickety-split and our beach hut quilt was sewn.
After a scary trip back to Virginia via the USPS, where "Beach Row" was lovingly quilted by the charming Carole Stephenson, she made it back to us and into this post.
We hope you love her as much as we do and decide to make one of your own.
Here's the lowdown on what we used:
A fat quarter bundle of OffShore 2 by Deena Rutter for Riley Blake Designs (but you could do it with a 10" stacker)
1 yard of the sky fabric, RBD Confetti Cotton "Bleached Denim"
1 yard of the sand fabric, RBD Confetti Cotton "Sand"
1.25 yards of the Main Navy C7980 for border
.5 yard of Plaid Red C7986 for binding
4.5 yards RBD Confetti Cotton "Sand" for backing
Here's the link to the foundation/applique block.
